Belle Isle has had an important role to play in the historical, cultural, and environmental landscape of Detroit. Due to this, there are many groups focused on preserving certain aspects of the island. Many of the buildings and other infrastructural elements on the island have been designated historic landmarks to be preserved. The Detroit Historical Society has even been able to share the maritime history of the island and other historical facts at the Dossin museum. However, if nothing is done to conserve the natural landscapes of the island and stem the tide of climate change, there's a possibility that the island and all of its historic landmarks could be lost to flooding. With this in mind, many conservation organizations have projects restoring natural habitats and bodies of water on the island.
