In a democracy, activism is one of the biggest ways for residents to be active in their government, however there is very little opportunity for activism in this civic space. The largest group active on the island is Belle Isle Concern, a group interested in stopping the annual Belle Isle Grand Prix. This group is mainly concerned with the fact that the race turns a largely public space into a private event and also has impacts on the natural environment. In fact environmental degradation is the main focus of the two other groups involved on the island. One is focused more on preserving the historic human-made natures, and the other is focused on protecting Detroit from climate change.
